“What’s My Direction?”

Cards: Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris’ full-size Thoth Tarot Deck

This reading was done for a long-time client. I randomly contacted this person and asked if they would like to receive a free reading, in exchange for being alllowed to post it on my website, with accompanying feedback. Please scroll down to the end to read the client’s response.

I have drawn 9 cards:

  • We start with the middle row, representing your current situation.
  • Next we go down to the bottom row, which describes the influences that brought to where you are today
  • Finally, we go to the top row, which represents the guidance from the Tarot.

Middle Row: Knight of Wands, Adjustment, Happiness

You are currently at a place of reckoning in your life. I guess this is true of most people who want a Tarot reading! One path follows a charismatic, passionate man. The other path is your sense of fulfilment and free choice. The virile, charismatic man may be an actual person in your life, or it might represent a very active, dynamic lifestyle. The advantages are that it would be easy to follow blindly such a person / life path. The disadvantages are that it would lead to an explosive, volatile situation that you want to avoid.

Taking the other path would certainly be less intense, but you wonder if you deserve to have so much freedom and luck. Of course you do! You would be entirely responsible for yourself and your actions – no blindly following the leader here. It’s a hall pass, a wish-fulfilling card. How often does a chance like this come around?

Imagine yourself as a very old person, looking back on your career and life choices. Imagine looking at your life like a map, or from the point of view of a very high mountain. Did you take the right turns? Did you make the best choices? Thinking about what choices you have right now, how much would they satisfy the old, wise version of yourself?

Bottom row: Knight of Cups, Love, Sorrow

You are thinking of taking a new direction in your life. It could be a new romance or business partnership, or it could be some new career. Even though this direction could be very fruitful and give you many new and refreshing advantages, you must be careful not to follow through with this without being very clear about your motivations. It could be that you are being blinded by your yearning for a romantic adventure. You are on the verge of being swept away in a current of emotion, and you quite like that. However, you have to get over some past hurt in order to make it happen, or it could be that engaging in this new love path will help you to overcome your past sorrow.

Top row: The Moon, Futility, Death

It’s sometimes necessary to be the bad guy. People may see you as severe and even ruthless. However, from your point of view, you are being handed the crappy end of the bargain. You feel like you do the boring, unpleasant and unglamorous jobs, and no-one thanks you for it. Time to cut your losses.

However, it’s difficult to achieve your full potential when the road ahead seems very dark and possibly dangerous. You will have to give up many things that you cherish in order to get to where you want to go – your self image as the “always there for you” person, for example. You will regret having to make tough decisions, but to each thing its season. The people, situations and things we chose in the past don’t always carry on sustaining us and fulfilling us.

Themes and Conclusions:

1. T-junctions

The Adjustment card is the card of Libra in the Tarot. Even though it’s hard to predict the future and there are so many unknowns, you are not victim, because victims do not have a choice. Remember: you are ready: The Tarot has faith in you, so you can have faith in yourself.

What may help is stepping stones: planning your course of action in a series of real steps that actually take place. There are no Earth cards in this spread, as though intellectually you know what you want, but you haven’t taken any concrete steps to get there. You might not even know what your ultimate goal is yet. If it’s difficult to plot your course from A to Z, try going from Z to A, or start at A and Z simultaneously and meet the two courses in the middle.

2. Following or leading?

Being in partnerships means you have to accept what is right for the other person is not always right for you. At what point do you have to say that you have given away so much of your integrity that it’s not really you in the relationship anymore? If the other person wants you, then why try to remodel you into something you’re not? If you both change for the sake of the relationship, could that satisfy you both?

3. Painful decisions

Holding on to painful memories does not honour them or the person you were when the event happened. Forgiving and forgetting honours you as you are now – take the moral high ground! Whatever it takes to get over past hurt, now is the time to engage with that. Moving forward might mean making tough decisions that make you look un-compassionate. But what is right for you? You are the most important person in your universe. Without your integrity, other people only have “shadow you” or “fake you” to rely on. It’s scary shit, but the Tarot says you are more than ready. Believe in yourself.

Client response:

“I have had Elise’s tarot readings before and they are always intensely accurate and provide the guidance that I need in making a decision.

Elise has a way with the tarot that taps directly into my intuition – it’s like she has a direct line to my inner knowing and will bring up exactly what I need to know – or what I often do know deep down, but for whatever reason my conscious or fear is blocking me accessing my truth.

One of my favourite things to do following a reading is print it off and carry with me to check as I work through a decision. Months/years later I often find the print and always, the message was there in her reading and everything turned out as Elise suggested it would.

However, this reading has blown me away. In a communication mix up – entirely my misunderstanding – I was waiting for the right moment to send Elise my question. But I was procrastinating. My question is the most personal I have ever considered in my life. It’s related to a relationship and I find the outcome of either option scary. Im still not ready to ask this question our right – I cant find the words to say what I am feeling inside and not to write them down and send to Elise yet (even though I know I could trust her 100%).

But in the mix-up – the reading landed in my inbox. The tarot answered my question before I dared ask.

If you read Elise’s words in the reading you can see without doubt what the advice is: ‘One path follows a charismatic, passionate man. The other path is your sense of fulfilment and free choice.’

Perhaps you can now guess what my situation is.

And then she says this:

“Imagine yourself as a very old person, looking back on your career and life choices. Imagine looking at your life like a map, or from the point of view of a very high mountain. Did you take the right turns? Did you make the best choices? Thinking about what choices you have right now, how much would they satisfy the old, wise version of yourself?”

If I told you how many times I have done this meditation in the last year you’d be shocked. I alreay know the answer to this visualisation. Deep down, I know what I must do.

But until now I have never dared say the words to anyone. Again, Elise tarot readings have gone straight to my inner guidance and brought what is so far only imagined and made it a concrete part of the world. I am in awe. I little scared of what I must do but if I read more in the reading it says everything will be ok. and I know that too.

Thank you, Elise. Your readings are moving and you truly have a gift. You are by far the best tarot reader I have ever encountered. you have a true gift and I shall be turning to you as my Oracle for many years to come.”
