Tokyo Tarot Rocks My World

It’s official: My Tarot students are the absolute BEST! They are funny, insightful, intelligent and supportive. Thank you to everyone who came to the second lesson yesterday, and see you soon I hope.

Third-Party Readings

To 3rd-Party read or not to 3rd-Party read? It’s when the person asks to know about someone who has not given permission to have their cards read.

Questions can include: Is my wife having an affair? Is my boss ever going to promote me? What’s he building in there?

A few years ago a woman client asked me to do a reading for a guy she had a crush on. It was in a café, and all the other people in the café knew both her and the guy involved, and everyone was listening in to the reading. Kind of tense! The guy in question wasn’t present, he was married and had a successful career as the drummer in a rock band. I told my client that she could get a reading about the relationship between her and this man, but his private life was his own business. She was obviously disappointed but short of putting a gun to my head, there was nothing much she was going to be able to do to change that.

To my amazement, the Tarot reading was all about him, his wife, his mistress, his manager, his career, his fans, they were all in there.

The Tarot showed him to be extremely stressed and unhappy, pressurised by the conflicting demands of so many people riding on the coat-tails of his career. My client sat through the reading in total silence, and at the end she said that she was going to just love him from afar, and stop stalking him like a beast.

It’s happened a few times that people have asked me to do a third-party reading, and I always say no, but you know that if the Tarot thinks you need to know about someone’s life, because that’s going to help you personally, then that’s the information you’re going to get.

To show what I mean, here’s a reading I did this morning. I asked the Tarot to help me illustrate my point with a fictitious office crush situation. The cards are from the Tarot de Jacques Viéville.

So obviously, thinking about the visual language of the Tarot, the very clear message is: “get your nose out of this person’s life. The way is closed, buster!” We see someone waving a big truncheon in our face, then the way is barred, then it’s super-double barred with an extra padlock. From a more traditional interpretation: He’s having a lot of sex and he’s partying a lot. Notice the numbers? It’s 1 – 2 – 4, multiplying the Wands exponentially. How does that help the client? It just makes them feel more left out and vulnerable than ever. However, check this:

See, now that’s better, isn’t it? A woman wrestling with her lust, looking back on past events and feeling even more left out and sorry for herself, while over on the other side the door is locked like Fort Effing Knox.

Just leave the dude alone, already, and attend to the matter at hand, which in this case is your beautiful pet lion, which has to be a metaphor for everything that’s beautiful and wild in your life. Stop pining over some guy who is ultimately going to ostracise you and leave you out in the cold.

Basically, it’s the same reading twice in a row. However, in the second reading, the message is a lot more personal and useful, don’t you think?

What do you think about 3rd-party readings? Some people say it’s tantamount to psychic spying and totally out of bounds. Others say: “Well, if I don’t get paid to do this, someone else will, so I may as well go ahead and do this thing. Who cares, anyway?” The difference is an ethical Tarot reader who feels honour and professionalism, versus someone who doesn’t care about you or the person who you’re stalking. Which person is going to give the better reading?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this controversial topic, so please comment below.

Star Spread: How do I know I have Permission?

Warning: Adult Content, y’all.

How do I know I have permission to succeed and feel fulfilled? Because of course I do have permission, I only need to get out of my own way. So in many ways the spread should be titled: “How do I get out of my own way, already?”

This spread is in Tom Benjamin’s book Tarot on Earth, which I just finished it this morning. It’s an Elemental Dignities spread, where you see how the Element of the card conflicts or complements the Element of the position. I like that. Tom also says that just because two elements clash according to conventional ED theory, it doesn’t actually mean they clash in reality, and can work together rilly well. Take Fire and Water: How you gonna get yourself in a nice hot bath if you don’t heat it up? But then I wonder if conflicting Elements are another case of “The Death Card Doesn’t Always Mean Death, Until of Course it Does”? Sigh. Here we are back at the reason I bought that book in the first place: to learn to use my intuition in a reading, instead of what I have learned empirically.

Speaking of which, let’s crack on and do this bad boy, shall we? What imma gonna do is a kind of hybrid visual language meets learned meanings. Hang on to your ovaries, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Card Interpretation
Spirit: Spare Card. Aha! The Tarot is in cahoots with my Higher Self and saying you can't have that information now. I kind of love it when that happens – which is why I always leave the spare cards in the deck. “Check back later friend.”
Water: Tower. Ben Says that this is actually a lot more like a phallic symbol than a nuclear explosion taking place all over your shit. As this is in the Water aspect of my spread and it's a hard-hitting Fire card I'd say it looks like some jerk just came all over my favourite black shantung blouse. If only I had a black shantung blouse. But actually you know it's about how my emotions just explode everywhere and take me back to ground zero. Looking for equanimity? It's a long way to the top if you want to rock'n'roll.
Fire: Hierophant. My passion is teaching apparently. The only thing is that I'm a Gemini so basically that whole Taurus vibe (Hierophant is Taurus) is a little s-l-o-w for me. Perhaps if I can see the long view that’s how I get to the place I want to be.
Air: Queen of Coins. I kind of despise my own materialism and wanting to succeed. My inner critic basically rules my inner roost. Just look at the way she's glaring at that Spirit position card.
Earth: 8 of Coins. OK good at least here I know I'm on the right track. Here the 8 of Coins looks like a field with flowers in it which is also a back-burner plan of mine. As this is the only card that is aligned with it's positional element and the only Pip to boot (what I feel I can do for myself) maybe this is the clue I've been waiting for.
Topics: There are a lot of Majors here. I seem to think that this situation is kind of out of my grasp and the signifier is the grasping old Queen of Coins. The only pip is the 8 of Coins and I guess that means that I know I'm on the right path.
Overall: So how DO I get out of my own way? I think I have to get over my fear of material success and align myself with a very Taurean view of the future.

Did the reading answer the question? What would you have done differently? Thoughts?

Court Cards – you can’t live with them and you can’t shoot them.

A lot of people have a big fat problem when it comes to Court Cards in the Tarot. As a Tarot teacher I usually advise my students to match each Court Card profile to a person they know, a celebrity, a character from a book or a film. That way, you get to know the Court Cards as individual personalities, which I think makes it a whole lot easier to relate to them and understand what they mean if / when they pop up in a reading. I made a series of YouTube videos and you can watch them via the link on my website HERE.

As you know if you read my post about the Tarot blogs I follow, one of my favourite Tarot writers is Kate, the Daily Tarot Girl. Her latest post was as usual hilarious, irreverent and a strong blast of insight into the Tarot. So if you have ishuze with the Court Cards, I strongly suggest you hop on over to her blog, have a good laugh and never worry about those pesky little buggers ever again. Check it out HERE.

Robert Moss’ Dreamgates

The other day a co-worker recommended I read Huckleberry Finn, and I said: “Oh, yes, what a good idea” and ran out of the room screaming inwardly. If only he knew what my to-read book pile looks like, or just how fantastic it is.

The books to which I so desperately cleave

For example, today I went on a delightful picnic with Mr. T in Nango Park Hayama and he went off to walk Star the dog (after whom this site is dedicated) meanwhile I was relaxing in the log grass reading the above. The weather was perfect, there were actual butterflies of several different types fluttering around with very loud and delightful bird-song and not a single person came by. It was all totally idyllic. Maybe that’s why I almost had tears in my eyes as I read the above. Anthropology, shamanism, journeying, dreaming, healing, you could say it’s got it all. Plus which Robert Moss has a couple of cracking websites with newsletters you can subscribe to HERE and HERE.

PS: You know at the beginning of this post I mentioned Huckleberry Finn? The top post at the moment on Moss’ blogspot blog which I linked to above is about Mark Twain. I’m totally serious.

Best Books on Medical Intuition

I learned Reiki about 10 years ago and ever since I’ve been wondering about techniques for healing. Don’t get me wrong, Reiki is an amazing system, an ultimate system. However, one of the key points is that we don’t direct Reiki, we simply channel it. There is no healer, there is only healing. However, my ego consciousness wants to direct the flow! So how can we go about doing that?

Tina Zion is a Reiki master, clinical hypnotist and registered psychiatric nurse. Her two books on Medical Intuition – and her book on Reiki – are absolute goldmines of information on how to understand clearly what is going with your client, with special techniques to help release problems, such as psychic intrusions, negative thought forms, addictions, soul loss and more.

Be warned, these are books that will take over your life. I have just finished the Advanced book, and it has taken me months to get through it. You have to keep stopping, read a bit of Middlemarch (or whatever else you have going on) and come back to it a week or so later, all the while practicing like a crazy thing.

So if you are frustrated with merely laying your hands on the clients’ body and hoping for the best, and you are looking to refine your healing and take on some fully next-level challenges, these are the books to get your mitts on.

Other books you might like:

Bhagvad Gita Narrated in English on iMusic

Well would you look at that. Instead of listening to the Bhagvad Gita on YouTube and needing to keep the screen on the whole time, now you can download it on iMusic. Fabulous.

I listen to it in the car, while I’m folding the laundry, cooking or strap-hanging on my train home. For me, the point is that I’m not closely listening, but that I know it because I’ve heard it so many times. I must have listened to this intensely amazing scripture dozens of times.

Here’s a snippet from Chapter 4:

”Chapter 4, Verse 18

One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is intelligent among men, and he is in the tranecendental position, although engaged in all sorts of activities.

Chapter 4, Verse 19

One is understood to be in full knowledge whose every act is devoid of desire for sense gratification. He is said by sages to be a worker whose fruitive action is burned up by the fire of perfect knowledge.

Chapter 4, Verse 20

Abandoning all attachment to the results of his activities, ever satisfied and independant, he performs no fruitive action, although engaged in all kinds of undertakings.

Chapter 4, Verse 21

Such a man of understanding acts with mind and intelligence perfectly controlled, gives up all sense of proprietorship over his possessions and acts only for the bare necessities of life. Thus working, he is not affected by sinful reactions.

Chapter 4, Verse 22

He who is satisfied with gain which comes of its own accord, who is free from duality and does not envy, who is steady both in success and failure, is never entangled, although performing actions.

Chapter 4, Verse 23

The work of a man who is unattached to the modes of material nature and who is fully situated in transcendental knowledge merges entirely into transcendence.

Chapter 4, Verse 24

A person who is fully absorbed in Krsna consciousness is sure to attain the spiritual kingdom because of his full contribution to spiritual activities, in which the consummation is absolute and that which is offered is of the same spiritual nature.”

Star Tarot Deck

I keep stopping and starting. With art, the hardest thing for me has always been commitment. And the feeling that I’m absolututy no good, but that’s probably true for most artists. I’ve been away for so long that the process is the same as relearning a foreign language.

Help me by sponsoring me on Patreon. It’s definitely very encouraging, and when enough people sponsor me I can spend more time doing art and less time teaching EFL.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

Mary El Tarot Two of Wands

Teal Swan says that yearning helps the universe because you are expanding it in your search for whatever it is you are yearning for, so you should not stop yearning. I agree. Yearning is good and natural. If it weren’t for yearning nothing would get invented and we would all wander around like herd animals or ants. The 2 of Wands in the Tarot is the card of yearning.

When it all gets too much, inevitably, here is what I suggest, and what has worked for me. It’s based on Focusing, a technique used by psychotherapists.:

1. Accept what you are feeling without trying to push the overwhelm away. Pushing emotions away does not make them go away permanently. Listen carefully and accept what your emotions are telling you. They are valid. You are valid.

2. Identify and fully experience the physical sensations that the overwhelm and sorrow is causing you. Try to name the complex array of emotions, and very precisely explain and name the exact physical sensations. Are you choking? Constructed? Fighting for breath? Do you feel punched in the stomach? Like your legs have been cut out from under you? Dirty? Name your physical and emotional sensations. Get very creative and analytical about it. Again, resist the temptation to push away or deny what you are feeling. It’s real.

3. If there is someone you can talk to, try to explain to them how you are feeling. Make sure that you say everything without being censored or talked over. Insist that they listen to it all. If there is no physical person present, call a helpline like Samaritans or Saneline. If your local numbers are all busy, call another country. You are not trivial or wasting anyone’s time. Your pain is real.

4. You do not need to:

  • Snap out of it / get over it
  • See the positive side
  • Forgive anyone
  • Be grateful – except to the person who is listening

5. You do need to:

  • Identify any thoughts or intention of self-harm, suicide, or harming others. Take yourself away from danger. If you feel like you are going to harm yourself or others, go to the police immediately.
  • Cry. Allow your emotions to express themselves. Cry into a towel or pillow if you have to minimise noise.
  • Drink water. This is a natural sedative. You gave probably lost a lot of water through tears. Going to the tap and pouring water is a good displacement activity.
  • Go outside. Get some fresh air.

6. Now say to yourself: “part of me is feeling…” do not jump right into the feeling, experience a little distance from it.

7. Listen without censoring yourself. Ask that part of yourself what it wants, what it needs. Act on it.

8. If you are silent and accepting of yourself enough, you will learn a great truth. If you don’t learn anything new about yourself, you can always try again. Believe me, it will happen again, like a very persistent telegram delivery. Act on that truth. You might hear:

  • God loves you
  • Believe in yourself
  • You are already a high achiever
  • Forgive yourself

9. Remember that forgiveness comes after healing, not the other way around.

10. Say a sincere thank you to the part of yourself that accepted to talk to you. Act on the guidance they gave you. Make friends with all the parts of yourself, Light and Shadow.

11. Try also: (other things that have worked for me in the past)

  • conscious breathing
  • healing others
  • prayer
  • perfume / incense
  • repeating: “It’s fine, I’m fine”
  • walking / exercise
  • eating
  • dedicating your experience to God / the universe
